888starz ice hockey betting: one position decides it
No other team sport hands so much of a result to a single player. A goaltender having a good night can carry a side that was outplayed for sixty minutes, and a backup starting at short notice can turn a short price into a fair one. Team news in hockey is not a detail — it is usually the story.
That is worth knowing first because it explains the shape of the market. Games finish one or two goals apart far more often than football scorelines suggest, so small edges matter and the handicap does most of the work.
Four markets and what separates them
- three-way line — home, draw or away at the end of regulation. The draw is real here, and this is not the same bet as the winner of the game;
- money line — the winner including overtime and the shootout;
- puck line — a goal and a half of handicap, the standard route to a price on a strong side;
- period totals — first periods are usually the tightest, and the market prices that in.
NHL and KHL are not the same problem
The NHL runs overnight here, with a schedule dense enough that a second game in two nights is visible in the numbers, and road trips that cross several time zones. The KHL fills the earlier window and covers a geography a European league would take a season to manage, which shows up in away form more than any standings table admits. Neither factor appears in the league table; both appear in the results.
If you are new to hockey, start with the three-way line alone. Once the difference between it and the money line is obvious to you, the rest of the market explains itself.
